Almost three French people in four
(73%) say that they have a negative image of Islam, while other
religions enjoy the approval of a clear majority, according to a poll
published this week.
People
hold a banner reading: ‘islamic fascism shall not pass” during a
demonstration in Paris recently. Hundreds of Frenchmen demonstrated in
Paris against Islamism, chanting the French anthem and saying Islam has
no place in France, which is home to Western Europe’s largest
population of Muslims, estimated to be at least 5 million
Although for 52%, Islam is a religion
like the others and for 40%, the presence of Islam in France allows
French culture to be enriched, only 36% consider the practice os Islam
to be compatible with the laws of the Republic.
In an effort to keep France French,
France has banned burqas, made Muslim street prayer illegal, and is
trying to ban Muslim mothers in headbags from attending school
activities with their children.
Little by little, it is the people,
not the politicians who will demand the banning or marginalization of
all things Islam that conflict with their secular society. Unlike
England, there are no sharia courts in France.
